Shane O'Neill's Club Notes

U12 Boys

Our U12 boys were the big winners in the club this week having triumphed in the shield competition at the An Ríocht 9 a-side tournament on Saturday. On arrival the Shanes were placed in a group with Moy Tir na nÓg, host club An Ríocht and St Michaels but unfortunately St Michaels didn't turn up on the day which left only two group games to be played. First up was the game against the Moy and this was a very close and high quality encounter that eventually ended in a draw. The second game saw the Shanes face the hosts and once again it proved to be an excellent game of football. The Shanes were leading right up until the final stages of the game but a late goal for An Ríocht saw them claim the win by a single point. These results put the Shanes in the shield competition and they were paired against Burren in their next game. This was a tight hard fought game but the Shanes always held the upper hand and won the game by a few scores. Next up was the semi-final against Aughlisnafin and again the young Shanes players were excellent and did what they needed to win the game and progress to the final. Awaiting them in the final were Magherafelt and the Shanes saved their best performance of the day to the final. They started the game quickly built up a decent lead and went on to control the game. It's been an excellent start to the season for this team and this victory was just reward for their efforts. Credit must also go to the manager Joe Lennon and John Grant who provides valuable support along with Cathal Quinn who also helped on the day. Training for the U12s has moved back to Tuesday and Friday nights at 6.00pm at the field.

Senior Men

Our senior were scheduled to play Culloville on Sunday but with Culloville drawing in the championship their replay took place this week-end.

Senior Ladies

Our senior ladies made the trip to Sarsfields on Saturday evening for their latest league game but despite putting in a decent performance the girls came up just short against a very good side. The Shanes trailed at half-time but a very spirited second-half performance saw them get themselves right back into the game only for an extremely fortuitous goal to turn the game back in Sarsfields favour. The final score was 5 - 12 to 3 -11 in favour of Sarsfields. Training continues this Tuesday at 7.00pm in St Paul's field in preparation for next Saturday's home game against range which throws in at 7.00pm.

Minor Boys

Our minor boys recorded a hard fought two point win over near neighbours Carrickcruppen last Monday night, 1 - 7 to 1 - 5. Carrickcruppen were the first on the score-board with a pointed free before Declan Harris pounced on a loose ball on the Cruppen square to score the game's opening goal. A Mark McCabe free stretched the Shanes advantage before Ciaron McMullan popped over his side's second point of the game. Another Cruppen free left them three in arrears but they converted a late first-half penalty to leave the teams level at the break. The Shanes made the better start to the second period with Ciaran Mackin and Mark McCabe firing over great long range scores and the same two players were on target again midway through the half to leave the Shanes four to the good. However Cruppen were by no means out of the game and they scored the next three points to leave just the minimum between the sides but a late free from Ciaran Mackin sealed the win for the Shanes.

Minor Girls

Training for the minor girls continues this week on Tuesday evening at 7.00pm in St Paul's field.

U16 Boys

The U16 boys had no game last week and have no game this week but are continuing train as normal.

Training for the U16 girls continues this week on Tuesday evening at 7.00pm in St Paul's field.

U-14 Girls

Training for U14 girls continues every Wednesday evening from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. It is vital that all girls attend training weekly. The next U-14 Division 1 league game takes place next Sunday, 24th May at home to Armagh Harps at 12.30pm.

U12 Girls

The U12 girls were in action on Sunday evening away to Cullyhanna but the result was unknown at the time of going to press. Training for U12 girls continues every Wednesday evening from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and it's vitally important that all girls attend these weekly sessions.

U10s

Our U10s welcomed their Culloville counterparts to Camlough on Sunday morning for a couple of challenge games. The Shanes U10s have been playing well this season but this was a different challenge to those faced so far against a very strong Culloville side. Two games were played on the morning and there was some excellent football played across both games. These games showed that there is still a lot of hard work to be done but there is great potential in this group of footballers. Training continues evening Tuesday and Friday evening at 6.00pm at the field.

U8s

The U8s had a mid-week game against Silverbridge and on a beautiful evening for football two excellent and exciting games of football took place and there were some great performances from the young Shanes players on the night. Training continues this Tuesday at 6.00pm and another game has been arranged for this Friday night and all players are asked to meet at the club at 6.00pm.

U6s

Our U6s continue to train every Wednesday evening in Bessbrook Community Centre from 6.00pm - 7.00pm. All boys and girls at this age group are more than welcome to come along.

Big Breakfast Morning

The club held a very successful Big Breakfast morning on Sunday with lots of people attending to enjoy a hearty feed whilst raising funds for the club at the same time. Everyone had a great morning's craic and we would like to thank all those who came along on the morning to support the club. We would also like to thank everyone who gave up their time on the day - from cooking and serving the food to washing up at the very end - your help was greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank local businesses - Courtney's Restaurant Newry, Hughes Supermarket Camlough and Trainors Bar Camlough - for their generous support of the event and also Féile Camloch for their generous and very much appreciated donation.

Well done to our very own Aimee Mackin, Aoibheann Jones and Blaithin Mackin who were all part of the Armagh Minor ladies who won the Ulster B title on Saturday, defeating Donegal in the final. Well done also to Yasmin Mackin who was part of the successful management team.
