Wolfe Tones and St Enda's Derrymacash club notes

September 22, 2014

Peil/Football
The Tones minors travelled up to the Athletic Grounds for the Armagh Division 3 Championship final against Naomh Eoin with confidence following a good win against Ballymacnab in the semis. Right from the throw-in the Tones showed their intent with Matthew Hosty converting following great work from Connell O'Hagan. Naomh Eoin soon drew level with Conor Cullen converting a free. The two sides traded scores with Caolán Farrell hitting two for the tones and Tyrone McGeary and Ryan O'Hagan getting the Naomh Eoin scores. The Tones wasted a couple of chances before Jodi Nixon put Naomh Eoin ahead for the first time. A great block from Andrew Austin kept the amalgamated side from hitting a first half goal and a Ryan O'Hagan conversion from a free pushed them two ahead. Scores were again traded with Chris Nugent, Andrew Austin and Callan Duffin the providers for the Tones men and Pearse Loughran and Conor Cullen with two maintaining the two point lead. The half was rounded up with the impressive Conor Cullen converting another free to bring the Naomh Eoin side in three points up at half time.
As the second half got underway, the Tones were denied a free and punished further with Conor Cullen adding his fifth point. The Derrymacash men stepped it up a gear and were denied a gilt-edged chance at goal when the referee forgot to play advantage and Chris Nugent had to be content to convert the free. A further three consecutive scores through Odhrán Magee and Chris Nugent with two more drew the sides level on 0-10 apiece. Naomh Eoin refused to panic however and hit a purple patch with Pearse Loughran and Conor Cullen converting two apiece. Naomh Eoin were also looking for a three pointer and it took the quick reflexes of Decky Boyle to clear the ball off the line. As the game went in to injury time, the Athletic Grounds witnessed one of the goals of the year when Caolán Farrell rifled to the net to bring the tones to within the minimum. Possession from the resulting kick out was vital but unfortunately for the Tones, they conceded a free which was hit straight up the field finding Conor Cullen, who duly finished to the net to break Tones hearts. Final score Tones 1-10 Naomh Eoin 1-14
The senior footballers suffered disappointment at the weekend when they lost by a single point to St Paul's in the final game of the league. The result meant that St Paul's won the league, with the Tones finishing second and earning promotion to the Senior Division. Although the boys were dejected after the game on Saturday, all of Doire Mhic Cais is extremely proud of their efforts all year and we would like to congratulate Conor, Barry, Darra and all of the boys on their promotion. Maith sibh.
Comhghairdeas to our Under 8 footballers who won the Denis Carville Under 8 cup at the Clan na Gael blitz on Saturday. We beat a good St.Peter's team in the final after a win versus Annaclone & draws versus Maghery, Clan na Gael and Clann Éireann in the group stage. Well done to Eimear McGeown, who deservedly won a player of the tournament award. Our Under 8s were excellent at times during the blitz and there is so much more to come from this exciting bunch. As ever, their conduct and attitude was a credit to themselves, their parents and the club.
Camógaíocht/Camogie
The club is delighted to announce that we have received £2549.00 from Sport NI towards the establishment of a North Armagh Indoor Camogie Blitz for 2014. This will provide a winter programme of indoor camogie matches for our underage camogie teams. 2014 has been a successful year for camogie within the club. We have fielded teams from Under 6 to Under 16, our senior camogs participated in the Intermediate Championship final and our Under 16s have volunteered as coaches and referees within our underage structure. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir a chuidigh linn go dtí seo. We thank everyone involved to date and look forward to a great winter of hurling in the 'Cash.
