Tony McEntee will sit down with County Board officials this weekend to discuss the vacant Down senior football manager's job.
If the talks prove productive, then the double All-Ireland winning Crossmaglen Rangers manager could be unveiled as the new Mourne County boss as soon as Sunday.
According to The Belfast Telegraph, a preliminary hearing has already taken place between the former Armagh star and Down officials, so this weekend's formal meeting could be a matter of crossing the 't's and dotting the 'i's.
McEntee, who currently manages Dublin club St Brigid's, originally distanced himself from the post but may have had a change of heart after Kieran McGeeney was handed a five-year term at the Orchard County helm.
If appointed, McEntee will probably bring his one-time Cross' co-manager Gareth O'Neill on board as part of the new-look Mourne County backroom team.
Former Down All-Ireland winner Conor Deegan and 2005 All-Ireland winning minor manager Mark Turley are also understood to be interested in the vacancy but McEntee is now the bookies' favourite to assume the reins.
