Senior Football / Peil Sinsearach

On Friday night past our seniors took to the St. Colmans surface for a league game against Crossmaglen 2nds. With the heavily depleted team due to work and injury problems our boys were determined right from the start. Before we would have seem the team use this as a excuse but not anymore and within the past 18 months these boys are making great strides. The team took to the field expectant of the win and right from the throw captain David Lenaghan caught the ball and delivered a killer pass for the first score of the game. More pressure followed by the boys and kept picking up points and centre half back Ryan Courtney on his debut was having a super game, sweeping up and giving his man no breathing space. Indeed the defence was on top and Cross had channelled 12 players back in order to stop the storm. Our boys were struggling to score and but we came into half time 0-06 to 0-02 up and exhausted after giving everything to the team. On the resumption Cross experienced started to show and eventually got the game level. An injury to full forward Danny Cinnamond meant veteran player Gerry O'Reilly had to be introduced to the game and his impact was immediately felt with Steven Tranior and Patrick Smith feeding off Gerry for a two point lead. However with only a few minutes left their killer instinct showed and they got four quick points to eventually run out winners 0-11 to 0-09. Speaking after the game team manager commented how pleased he was with the boys effort and also how unlucky they were to end up on the losing side after dominating for long periods of the game. O'Reilly pointed out although ten players were missing he still had a panel of 20 players and that five 18 year olds were on his team. Overall it was a good performance but poor result however the boys will bounce and get more points on the board.

Ard Mhaca Under 14 Division 3 Football League

Ballyhegan v Thomas Davis

4-13 v 2 - 4

Thomas Davis made the long journey to Ballyhegan and the young players of Thomas Davis more than matched their opponents for 25mins until a late goal at the end of the first half put more than two scores between both sides.

The young Thomas Davis team have found the going tough but they have never lacked spirit or heart and they showed this in abundance as they attempted time after time to play their running and supporting football in the heat of a sultry summer evening.

It is the younger players who have been leading by example this year and with the likes of Matthew and Sean Dowdall missing it was important that others stood forward to take the lead and once again in his first season Jamie Gaskin showed why he is a handful for any defence, as he scored the first point for Thomas Davis and ran at the heart of the Ballyhegan defence time and again in the first half, before leaving the field in the second half due to injury. The away side unfortunately wasted at least 3 free kicks in each half and in the second half especially, the away side should have closed the scoring gap, as they had quite a few goal chances. The only Thomas Davis player able to put the ball away was young full forward Christopher O'Hare who had the ability to sniff out two goal scoring opportunities and looks one for the future. Jonjo Cranney and captain Brendan McLoughlin also got on the scoresheet but it was the home side in the end who celebrated the win but the future is bright. Roll on Tuesday night at home.

Line up was as follows:

Niall Taggart, Jarlath Jennings, Conor Lenagh, Brendan McLoughlin, Tiarnan Hanna, Jonjoe Cranney, Matthew Taggart, Ronan Casey, Jamie Gaskin, Marron, Caolan Mallon, Joshua McAteer, Adam Coughlan and Christopher O'Hare.

U16 championship Semi Final

Thomas Davis Corrinshego 2-13 An Port Mor 1-10

On a bright and sunny Thursday evening in Whitecross GFC our U16 team took the field for the Semi-Final of the Championship against An Port Mor. With expectations of this team now reaching sky high levels our boys were expected to coast into the final! With team mentor David Lenaghan dishing out pre match instructions a lazy warm up was noticed by the spectators. As the ball was thrown in An Port Mor had done their homework signalling out team captain Declan Loye and scoring sensation Caolan Marron for man marking duties. Indeed it was the opposition who started brightly going 3 points to no score up inside 10 minutes and showing no signs of taking the pressure off. With the defence under constant pressure it needed someone to provide something special and we had that in goalkeeper Ryan Gray who kept out 3 goal chances in a row along with some help from the cross bar. The switch of a star corner back Shane Keenan to mark their No.11 danger man proved the key moment in the first half. Indeed Shane's relentless marking and desire for the ball proved to much for his man. With Conor Jennings at half back showing brilliantly a Caolan Marron wonder point settled the nerves slightly. An Port Mor tagged over a few more points to be 0-07 to 0-01 up with 5 minutes to go but as with all good teams the quality players cannot be stifled for long and inside these thrilling 5 minutes Caolan Marron turned on the craft and pinged over 3 points in succession. As the 1st half drew to a close the vast majority in ground could not believe there was only a 3 point deficit. It would have been easy for coach Lenaghan to turn on his troops and point the blame however he demanded more from his team and boy did they deliver. What happened in the next half was one of the finest displays of team work and fight shown from a Thomas Davis GFC team. Team captain Declan Loye turned on the power and class with a complete domination of midfield. Time after time his penetrating runs led to scores and the opposition tactics of dropping a sweeper in front of Marron could no longer hold up. Now our team had started to dominate with the scores level coach Lenaghan made the brave decision of moving defensive rock TJ Hughes from full back to midfield and meaning Declan Loye could no longer be singled out by the opposition. With TJ gone it needed someone else to be that rock in defence and Conor Jennings decided that now was his day to have a career game. After a opposition storming run, young Jennings faced with a man mountian charging at him took one for the team and put in a inch perfect shoulder to his opponent, freeing the ball and releasing Declan Loye for a breathtaking goal that raised the entire team. Thomas Davis now were on top, with some heavy tackles being dished our players kept the football flowing tagging over points with ease and riding the wave of pressure before running out winners 2-13 to 1-10. It was a complete 2nd half performance with some stunning performances. The boys now move onto the final and hopefully will take home the first trophy of the season. It is always hard to single out one player over the others however special mention will go to TJ Hughes, Declan Loye 1-02, Caolan Marron 0-11, Shane Keenan, Connor Jennings, and goalkeeper Ryan Gray.
