Young Ireland v Thomas Davis GFC 2 - 7 V 3 - 6

This was the first league game of the season for our young charges and for many of our players this was their first time playing at this level. As such coaches never know what they will fully get from their starting team, but this young line up put a smile on the face of coaches and spectators alike through their grit, determination and commitment to the Thomas Davis shirt. In fact it was one of their youngest players who put the away side on the scoreboard, as the nippy Ronan Casey rattled the crossbar and then sent the ball over the bar in the first 5 mins. Newly appointed Under 14 Captain Brendan McLoughlin then fired over the second point for the away team, before the home side took a hold of the game, going ahead by 4 points before half forward Jonjoe Cranney reduced the Dorsey lead to 3 points at the half time whistle.

The second half began in a similar fashion as the Dorsey contingent broke the Thomas Davis back line to score a goal, leaving 6 points in it.

It was at this stage that Captain Brendan McLoughlin showed his class, as he broke through midfield time and again to score a point and a much needed goal. Minutes later he also played a neat ball into forward Karl Treanor, who burst the net again, before new full forward Jamie Gaskin showed great hand/eye coordination to palm a half chance into the opposition goal. After a scintillating 15 mins, the away side now found themselves 4 points in front and they expected an onslaught from the home side, which duly came for the last ten minutes of the game. It was here where the young players really showed their metal, as goalkeeper Dean Sheridan, Full back Matthew Dowdall and left back Niall Taggart (playing his first game for the club in 3 yrs) threw themselves in front of shot after shot to preserve the lead.

The away side in the end conceded two late points but celebrated the win with grace when the referee blew for full time for there are many games yet to come. But a great start to the year lads. Maith thu.

Line up was as follows:

Dean Sheridan, Niall Taggart, Matthew Dowdall, Sean Dowdall, Jarlath Jennings, Conor Lenagh, Brendan McLoughlin, Tiarnan Hanna, Jonjoe Cranney, Matthew Taggart, Karl Treanor, Ronan Casey, Glenn Murray, Bradley Murray, Ethan Casey, Jamie Gaskin, Junior Marron, Conor Cinnamond.

The minor team of amalgamated Thomas Davis and CarrickCruppen GAA clubs got the season off to a great start with a big win against close rivals and neighbours Shane O Niells on Monday Night (7th).

The team started slow at the beginning of the game, conceding a goal and two points before finding the momentum to start their climb. Points from Conor Brennan and Richard Keenan brought the team onto the score sheet. Declan Loye and Aaron Anderson also got their names down before lee Courtney smashed and right hand side goal to bring Doire Mor Gaels ahead for half time.

Throughout the second half, Doire Mor began to dominate in all areas with superb breaking ball wins from Conor Loye and good off the shoulder work from Brendan Mc Corry and Richard Keenan left the Shanes defence bewildered. Great Defensive work from Aaron Cinnamond, Stephen King and Sean Mc Parland held off the Shanes attacking chances before Doire Mor gained another scruffy but effective goal from a sideline kick which left the team 6 points ahead. The team continued to score another point from Aaron Anderson and substitute Jordan Mackey and a goal from Richard Keenan left the win in our hands.

The score finished up Doire Mor Gaels 3-13 : 1-9 Shane O Niells which has started the ball rolling for a hopefully successful season ahead.
Tonight's minor game between Clan Eireann and Doire More Gaels has been postponed as a mark of respect to the death of a Clan Eireann senior player, who passed away. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends.
