Slaughtneil have carved a niche for themselves as the first Derry club to have their name inscribed on the Ulster Club SHC roll of honour.

The Oak Leafers upset the odds when lowering Loughgiel Shamrocks' colours on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-13 at the Athletic Grounds today.

The four-in-a-row Derry champions enjoyed the best possible start and early goals from Cormac O'Doherty and Brendan Rogers laid the foundations for their four point victory.

They had 2-3 on the scoreboard before their Antrim opponents opened their account through Brendan McGarry in the 10th minute.

Slaughtneil enjoyed a 2-8 to 0-7 lead at the halfway stage and successfully managed to stand firm in the face of a second-half Loughgiel comeback.

A scrambled Shamrocks goal at the three quarter hour mark failed to knock the winners off their stride.
