Kieran McGourty has become the most-decorated player in All-Ireland Sevens history.

McGourty, who netted the winning score in a penalty shoot-out on Saturday as Antrim giants St Gall's defeated hosts Kilmacud Crokes in the final, has picked up six winners' medals.

He won his first Sevens title with the Milltown club in 2005, when Castleblayney Faughs from Monaghan were beaten in the decider, and added more medals in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014, with victories over Glenullin, Bellaghy, Corofin and Bryansford respectively.

"That's six for me and they reckon that's a record," the 35-year-old former Antrim forward told The Irish News. "Bryansford won five over a 13-year period and Terry O'Neill and Aodhán Gallagher have five in our club and I was able to get six on Saturday.

"Terry is injured and Aodhán is in Cardiff teaching at the minute, so they weren't there on Saturday.

McGourty operated as fly goalkeeper at the weekend. "Goals, probably, is the only position I could play," he says. "I have to give credit to the rest of the players because they are probably a bit fitter and sharper - they get the harder tasks out marking players and making long, hard runs, so I've just fell lucky, I suppose."
