Johnston rules out Antrim switch

Down hurling manager Michael Johnston

Mickey Johnston won't be putting his name forward for the vacant Antrim hurling job.

Johnston, whose sons Conor and Ciaran play for the Glensmen, is committed to another year in charge of Down. He went for the Antrim post four years ago when Kevin Ryan was the successful candidate.

"I've three years with Down and I've my second season done," the St. John's clubman told the Irish News.

"The Down county board have their own processes to go through - I'm there for another year, but I would have no objections if a Down man put his hand up and said they were willing to take the Down job.

"I personally believe the best man for a county job is a man from the county. That may seem strange for me to say as I've been with Armagh and Down.

"But I have a great relationship with the players, with the board. Even if I wasn't there in 2017, from the team that won the Christy Ring [in 2013] to the panel now fo 30, they're placed in a position to push on.

"My intention would be that I want to be there."
