Stabbed for wearing GAA top

A Co. Tyrone man who was stabbed in Belfast last Sunday evening believes he was targeted because he was wearing a GAA top.

Conor Lynch, who lives in the Ormeau Road area of the city but is originally from Castlederg, was stabbed on the top of his right thigh as he walked alone on Annadale Embankment, which is a loyalist part of south Belfast.

Recalling the terrifying moment he was confronted by a male dressed in a black zip-up jacket, jeans and trainers, Lynch told the Irish News: "At first I thought he punched me, but I looked down and there was blood coming out of my leg. It was pouring pretty quickly.

"I was scared and panicking. My leg just kind of gave way and buckled underneath me. I think he was going for the stomach. I dived sideways and he caught my leg."

The stab victim is convinced he was attacked for wearing a GAA top.

"I would wear GAA stuff and Tyrone jerseys," he explained.

"It's possible that he could have seen me before and I could have been watched. I have been going out walking every evening at that time taking the same route."
