Anto calls on sports fans to show their colours

November 07, 2014

At the launch were Armagh's Aaron Findon and Monaghan's Rory Beggan with Anto Finnegan and Dublin manager Jim Gavin

Anto Finnegan sees his historic Gaelic football match between Dublin and an All Star Ulster selection tomorrow week at Ravenhill as an opportunity to unite all sporting organisations in the North.

The #GameForAnto is being held to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease, and sees Ulster GAA and Ulster Rugby combine in honour of the former Antrim football captain, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2012.

"I want to see people who follow soccer clubs, people who follow Ulster rugby and GAA fans all coming in the jerseys of their beloved teams and standing or sitting shoulder to shoulder at what I feel will be a terrific sporting occasion," Finnegan said in the Belfast Telegraph.

"I think this will be a unique event. It is not just a GAA occasion - it is a match of which everyone can feel part and indeed play a part in by their support and enthusiasm. I would just love to see every possible shade of jersey on display - I know that, in the true spirit of the occasion, no one will take exception to what anyone else is wearing."

He added: "I think sport can be a great unifying influence and I have no doubt that this will be very much in evidence at the Kingspan Stadium. Ulster team manager Joe Kernan is already formulating his team and I can promise that spectators will see the cream of talent from this part of the world on show."
