Ravenhill to host its first Gaelic football match

Ravenhill Road, the home of Ulster Rugby.

Ravenhill, or Kingspan Stadium as it has recently been renamed, will host its first Gaelic football match in the coming weeks.

The historic game will be in aid of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), with details expected to be announced shortly.  The event will be spearheaded by Anto Finnegan, the former Antrim football captain, who, following his diagnosis with MND, has been committed to building awareness and financial support for the degenerative disease.

"A few years ago the GAA were very kind to allow rugby to be played in Croke Park during the development of Lansdowne Road.  It's nice for Ulster Rugby now to return the favour and stage a GAA match here," an Ulster Rugby official said.

Details of the charity game first surfaced in late 2013 when the terminally-ill Finnegan said: "Ideally the game would have been staged at Casement Park, but with the redevelopment taking place there and the pitch unavailable, we were keen to keep the event in Belfast.

"Ulster Rugby are very keen to make the event happen, and so is the GAA in Antrim and Ulster, and it's a really unique opportunity to stage a GAA match at Ravenhill."
