Demands on players "absolute madness", says McCann

Antrim's Michael McCann holds possession

Former Antrim midfield star Michael McCann has described the level of commitment required by inter-county players today as “absolute madness”.

McCann retired from duty with the Saffrons at the end of the 2016 season and has been in fine form for his native Cargin as of late.

The 33-year-old turned down an offer from Lenny Harbinson to return to the Antrim panel and says that the present demands on players are simply too much.

“It’s just absolute madness. Injury rates are all going up. Players just say yes, yes, yes,” McCann told the Irish News.

“They just go with it because they’re being told ‘Dublin are doing this’ or somebody else is doing that, and you don’t even ask.

“You just think you’re not going to be the man to say ‘no, I’m not doing that’. And if you are, you walk away from it. That’s the only way to say no.”
