Leagues seem to be shaking up for who is in contention for promotion and relegation. Bit of a strange one seeing St Lomans giving Tyrellspass a walkover in Division 3. Could be crucial for relegation in that division as Bal and Bun are desperate for points

Tyrrellspass gave the walkover. Wrong on Westmeath website. Tpass even said as much on their social media

Replying To ear2ground:  "Credit where its due to this group of players two years back to back of top summer football against countries top sides. I was in the Athletic grounds last year what an atmosphere. Didnt make Cusack park unfourtanetly but I wont miss the Tribe coming this year. With that said I do expect the team to struggle against each opposition. We really are punching way above weight at the moment. Our "academy" is not very competitive at all with the u17s failing to win a game in last 2 years and u20s are in a very dissapointing B All -Ireland. The Games Development officers are thin at the line and Darren Magee's role really has to be questioned? I really do worry we will bottom out like longford/Laois in years to come. But i want this to be a positive post best of luck to the lads in 3 games ahead. Des has done a great job to date and im sure some of the hurling folk will have to switch forums soon giving their recent form."
The senior team has been making steady improvement, regardless of what anyone says. Dining with the top teams in the championship for the second season running has to be defined as progress. Consistency between games has to improve. Its a big challenge to get out of our group but Id rather be competing at highest level.

A pity the minors bottomed out against Meath after competing well for most parts in opening two games. The u20s have only got better with each game, creating loads of goal chances is always a good sign. In fairness they couldve had 4 or 5 goals against Meath so Im delighted they have been able to prove their worth.Hopefully well see plenty of them in a Westmeath jersey at senior. We havent won a Leinster u20/u21 or minor title in 24 years, were not contesting finals either.

Great to be optimistic but to say the 20s have improved each outing is stretching it, tough championship draw admittedly but in Ashbourne we were completely outplayed, we didn't score for 35 minutes, match was over after 20-25 minutes, obviously it's a decent Meath side as they're Leinster champions but our two championship displays in the main competition were well off the standard required.

So it's confirmed we have Armagh away, Galway at home and Derry neutral, how do we feel about these fixtures? Last year we showed a lot of promise in the group stage with 2 of the same teams as this year, hopefully something similar would be great against 3 top teams

We were well in the game against Galway at home last year until Comer came on and won it for Galway. We should have beaten Armagh away until a late mix up gifted them a goal -Derry game will be tough but great challenge to look forward to.Hopefully we can be competitive.

Westmeath: J Daly; J Smith, K Maguire, J Gonoud; J Dolan, A McCormack, D Lynch 0-1; S Duncan 0-2, R Connellaan; S McCartan, R O'Toole 1-1, S Baker; l Loughlin 0-2, J Heslin 0-6 (3f), S Smith.

Subs: J Lynn for Baker (37), R Wallace for J Smith (40), K Martin for S Smith (54).

Team that played Armagh last year what changes do we see being made this year? Sam Duncan only one not in squad anymore.

Looking forward to the next challenge for westmeath snr footballers. Nothing easy but definitely where we want to be imo. Top table football can only make us stronger long term.
Was thinking about the way the game has gone and wondering will be ever have a dessie dolan, mattie forde, declan brown type footballers again, I know there are players with the ability but does the new playing system allow for them???

Ah mick, I would see top table football as Sam maguire competition, maybe something differentfor you. 2nd year in a row. We will be playing some of the top teams in the country, will be a great test. I and everyone else know your views on westmeath football but I will remain positive and back the team, if we were offered promotion to div 2, a league title and playing in sam at start of year, I think honestly we'd have taken it, obviously wicklow was a bad result but for 2nd year in a row we have got an extremely difficult draw, but at least its at the top table. I hope you and everyone else can get behind dessie and the team. Best of luck to the 20s and minors also this weekend.
