As it stands, If I were to pick the team for Championship tomorrow it would be
1: Darach Fahy 2: Morrissey 3: Daithi Burke 4: Grealish 5: Mannion 6: Shane Cooney 7: Cianan Fahy 8: Sean Linnane 9: David Burke 10: Cathal Mannion 11: Conor Cooney 12: Joseph Cooney 13: Brian Concannon 14: Conor Whelan 15: Evan Niland
Bit of a more experienced side to start, but you'd have good game winners off the bench too chomping at the bit to come in, the likes of Flynn, Tom Mon, Gavin Lee etc
I would expect Tiernan Killeen to make a real push for a halfback spot and Shane Cooney would probably be on thin ice. You'd have good depth there in the fullback line with TJ, Fintan Burke, Gearoid Mac pushing as options
I have linnane in there because you'd be dropping Mannion into the middle third. It would free up Mannion and Davey Burke to do what they do best - get on the ball and find the forwards. Linnane would do the dog work and Mannion can push up then whenever needed. Glennon, Lee and Monaghan would be pushing for a game here and one of them would probably be replacing Burke at 50 mins
Cooneys in the half forward line give it a bit of size and Niland would be operating around there too. If they need to go 3 in at full forward at any stage then Conor Cooney is a good option with young lads as options

Shane Cooney seems to struggle when he pulls on a Galway Jersey.

Replying To Viking66: "Aside from Shane Cooney very similar to last years team?" No not that similar - along with Shane Cooney, Darach Fahy and David Burke did not play championship last year plus there are positional switches. Jason Flynn may also be pushing for a starting place but may be better utilized as an impact sub. Kevin Cooney and Declan McLoughlin may also be back for the championship or the latter part of the championship.

Replying To Viking66: "Aside from Shane Cooney very similar to last years team?" It is fairly similar but a few points
1: I think Darach Fahy is a better goalkeeper than Eanna Murphy, especially with distribution. That has probably been Galways biggest issue over the last couple of years. Not all down to the GK by any means but it could be an upgrade
2: Getting Daithi Burke back into his natural position for the full year is important. Shane Cooney is the most natural 6 in the squad and the best 6 in the county at club level
3: Cianan Fahy is probably Galways best athlete, I think it's good to have him at Wingback and Joseph Cooney be the ball winner
4: David Burke being back is important for their link between backs and forwards, Mannion was doing it all on his own last year and when he needed to push up a bit against Limerick they were lost
5: You are banking on Conor Cooney rediscovering his form a bit, I think the bench would look stronger and the profiles they have coming off the bench are more suited for that at this stage

I think he's a really underrated hurler. Aside from that I'd be going pretty much with what you have. Senior championship is a huge step up from Senior League physically, and much higher intensity. Alot of your younger lads I'd put in the same boat as ours. Yes some are great prospects but for our team that I picked on our thread most of the established lads are in there once they are fully fit. A lad who is 21, 22, 23 still has plenty of time to get up to the size and speed required. If you rush them in too early it could set them back. Obviously there are one or 2 exceptions to that in every county, but in general I think that's true for everyone. It's a shame they don't bring u20 back to u21 tbh.

Tom Mon in ahead of Linnane.
Half forward line strong.
Niland would be well back for me this year. If Kevin Cooney fit, hes in, otherwise McLoughlin or Jamie Ryan.
Its a 15 that is still missing 2 or 3 bigger lads though.

I still am not convinced with Grealish at cornerback. He is fast but gets too easily pushed off the ball and is not the tightest of markers. I would have Tuohy or even Mahony ahead of him. I think Fintan also deserves a spot as he is the best fullback in Galway cub hurling as Daithi usually plays centre-back for his club.

Only time he wears it has been for Galway. Not disputing he is one of or the best full back ever to grace the maroon and white Jersey but he's always preferred to play further out the field. Games seem to be won and lost between the two 45s nowadays so I've no issue with him there if an adequate full black is there. TJ tried. Now Fintan. Both fail I'd say its back to GMac.

I'd love to see Daithi put the pitch. Maybe Tom Monaghan possibly to start with David Burke to come in. We seem to fade in third quarter and having a David Burke or other experienced lad to come in would allow us to have an experienced lad at full intensity to set the tone. Conor Cooney at 14 is definitely an good option, Whelan can get isolated in there

He is too important in terms of work rate and he can produce 3 or 4 from play when the radar is on.

I think Raphael's have a right chance of getting to the final. Very solid all over the field. Ballygar look strong at their level. Joey Wallace good player and there is a fair amount of talk about Harry Holmes who will be central for the Galway minors later in the year. The minors played Cork a few weeks ago and beat them handy in challenge match. Good looking team this year.

I'd love if I am proved wrong on that though.
Only other change is I'd have is Tom Monaghan as one of first names on the team sheet every day so would drop Niland from the team above for him and let Conor Cooney take the frees.
Would love to see Dec McLaughlin or Jamie Ryan step up this year also.

Since the introduction of Eamon o Shea Niland is the playmaker who set up others. Cooney is going well but I noticed Niland is setting him up. Brillant as many have these two in competition which they are not for me. Agree Tom Monaghan to be included but it has to be half forward line but he has to improve against the big teams. Shane Cooney has not shown enough but hopefully he will come good with more games Cathal Mannion will go in midfield so that will make a place for Monaghan. Jack Grealish has to and will improve with more games. Cant see Jamie Ryan making the step up but Declan is well on the way and now an option.

Monaghan is absolutely one of the 15 best hurlers, but I think if he's to come in it will be for David Burke. I prefer the balance of Burke/Linnane and then what an option to have Monaghan off the bench as a closer, nearly a guarantee for 3 or 4 points. Certainly wouldn't be disappointed if he was at 11 either as long as they had the size around him
If Shane Cooney was to drop out I'd probably have Cianan at 6 and Tiernan Killeen wing back.
I think Fintan Burke at Fullback would be an issue again with pace
