Meath Hill's Cormac Sheehy

Meath Hill 1-15 Oldcastle 1-05

Meath Hill looked to stop the bleed after two defeats over the weekend. They welcomed Oldcastle to Meath Hill on Thursday night for a rematch of the Corn na Boinne final. Meath Hill had the better of the early exchanges as Gary Breslin was fouled multiple times in the opening  15 minutes ,three of these points were converted by Breslin himself, on the ten minute mark Breslin was quickest to a wayward back pass to the Oldcastle netminder which resulted in a spot kick to Meath Hill. This was converted by Meath Hill’s Dominic Yorke.

Oldcastle worked hard throughout the first half but they found it hard to break down a well organised Meath Hill defence. Scores in the first half for Oldcastle kept them in the game as a contest right up to the 23rd minute when Meath Hill began to pull away. Cormac Sheehy was to the fore as he would end the half with four points to his name. The last scor , a free before half time was elegantly curled over by Sheehy to leave the half-time score Meath Hill 1-09 Oldcastle 0-03.

The second half commenced with Oldcastle desperate to bring themselves back into the game. These scores did not come though, as a tough Meath Hill defensive unit seemed unwilling to give any concession of ball or yardage. Oldcastle would score a well worked goal through the second half but Meath Hill were well in control at that point as Sheehy continued to poke holes in Oldcastle’s rear-guard to great effect.

The game would end with Meath Hill capitalising on some haphazard defending from Oldcastle with the final score a wonderful score from Sheehy in the left- half forward position, as he flicked the ball up to himself and turned and curled over the score of the night. Sheehy would end the game with 0-09 to his name, 0-07 from frees. Graham Boylan marshalled his troops well at the back and their stout defensive work was the catalyst for so much of Meath Hill’s attacking prowess. Paddy Matthews was tireless at midfield.
